When the cold settles over Waterloo Region, it’s tempting to nudge the thermostat up another degree or two. But if your furnace is already running long cycles and your upstairs still feels cool, a higher setting just means a bigger gas bill and more wear on the equipment. The better question is: where is the heat going?
Here’s how Kitchener homeowners can keep the house warmer this winter without burning out the furnace, starting with the attic.
The Real Job of Your Furnace
Your furnace doesn’t heat a house once and stop. It keeps replacing heat as the house loses it. In a well-insulated home, that’s a light job. In a home with a thin attic and leaky top floor, the furnace is constantly chasing heat out through the ceiling. Reduce the loss and the furnace runs less, which is the whole goal.
Step 1: Look at Your Attic
Kitchener has a wide mix of homes, from older brick houses close to downtown to 1970s and 80s subdivisions and newer builds on the edges of the city. Many of them share the same weakness: not enough insulation above the ceiling. Over time, loose-fill insulation settles, gets disturbed by work in the attic or was simply never installed to today’s levels.
A properly insulated attic is the foundation for a warmer house. Attic insulation in Kitchener can usually be completed in a day with minimal disruption.
Signs You Need More
- Upstairs rooms are noticeably colder than the main floor.
- Ceilings on the top floor feel cool to the touch.
- Snow melts quickly off your roof after a snowfall.
- You see icicles or ice ridges along the eaves.
- Ceiling joists are visible above the insulation.
Target R-50
Ontario’s attic rebate program sets R-50 as the goal. That works out to about 13 to 15 inches of blown-in cellulose or about 17 to 19 inches of blown-in fibreglass. Clean existing insulation can stay, and the new layer adds to it.
Two things to get right while you’re up there: keep the soffit vents clear with baffles, and remove any insulation that’s wet or contaminated with attic insulation removal before topping up.
Step 2: Seal the Top of the House
Warm air escapes into the attic through gaps around light fixtures, exhaust fans, plumbing vents and the attic hatch. Sealing those gaps before adding insulation gives you more benefit from every inch. For a full-house approach, AeroBarrier air sealing seals leaks from the inside.
Step 3: Fix the Cold Room Over the Garage
Many Kitchener two-storey homes have a bedroom above an unheated garage. It’s almost always the coldest room in the house, and it can make you set the thermostat higher for everyone. Garage ceiling insulation fixes the cause instead of the symptom.
Step 4: Run the Furnace Smarter
- Change or check the filter monthly during heating season. A clogged filter starves the blower.
- Keep returns and registers clear of furniture and rugs.
- Use setbacks overnight and when you’re out, rather than big temperature swings.
- Book annual maintenance so small problems don’t become a no-heat call in February.
A Rebate Note for Kitchener Homeowners
The Home Renovation Savings attic rebate offers up to $1,250 for bringing an attic to R-50 without a home energy assessment. There’s an important catch in Kitchener: if your home is heated with natural gas, the program requires you to be an Enbridge Gas customer. Many Kitchener homes receive gas from Kitchener Utilities instead, so check your gas bill before counting on this rebate.
Homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood may still qualify if they’re connected to Ontario’s electricity grid. The attic-only rebate has to be done by a program-participating contractor, and the program is currently scheduled to run to November 30, 2026. Full eligibility details are in the official program terms, and our rebate page has more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my furnace running constantly?
Most often, the house is losing heat as fast as the furnace can produce it. A dirty filter, blocked vents or a furnace that needs service can also be to blame, so it’s worth ruling those out.
Am I eligible for the Ontario attic rebate if I’m a Kitchener Utilities customer?
If you heat with natural gas, the program requires Enbridge Gas service, so Kitchener Utilities gas customers may not qualify for this specific rebate. Check the official terms or contact the program to confirm.
How long does attic insulation take?
Most attic top-ups are completed in a single day, and you can stay home during the work.
